Blue is one of the artist’s favorite colors. The mood in these paintigs is underlined by the blue color scheme. Even though blue is generally referred to as a cool color, in symbolism, as well as in effect, it has some other qualities that come with many positive associations and thus counteract the "coldness" attributed to it, such as harmony and sympathy. The vastness and infinity of the blue sky contribute to relaxation as well as inspiration and reverie.

Obwohl Blau ein kühler Ton in der Farbpalette ist, hat es von der Symbolkraft her einige andere Eigenschaften, die mit vielen positiven Assoziationen verbunden sind und somit der ihm zugeschriebenen "Kälte" entgegenwirken, wie Harmonie und Sympathie, Entspannung, Inspiration und Träumerei. In diesem Gemälde stehen diese positiven Assoziationen im Gegensatz zu der leichten Melancholie, die beim Blick in die Augen des Mädchens spürbar wird.
